"I'm gonna bathe and shave
And dress myself, and eat solo every night.
Unplug the phone, sleep alone
Stay away out of sight.
Sure, it's kind of lonely,
Yeah, it's sort of sick:
Being your own one and only
Is a dirty selfish trick."
—Loudon Wainwright III, "One Man Guy"
And in case you hadn't heard, go see Knocked Up. Ol' Loudon has written the soundtrack. So go see it. Right now. Stop whatever you are doing (I know it can't be any damn use) and go see it. Make my job mean something.
I promise I'll post here more, if that means anything.
Posted by mesh at June 3, 2007 06:30 AM | TrackBackI loved the movie Mesh. And I of course loved seeing Loudon in there as well (did you catch him as the doctor?). I appreciated the Harold Ramis/Judd Apatow comparison in your review because it made a lot of sense to me. I think hes got some Woody Allen to him as well and not just because they are both Jewish film writers. Allen was probably as sexually offensive in his time as Apatow is today, and they both managed to make their sexual raunchiness genuinely
endearing. They both use a lot of improv, they put their characters in some similar moral dilemmas (to remain narcissistically male or not to), and did I mention that they were both Jewish? Actually, I realize the comparison thins out a bit after that (Allen is ultimately more pessimistic, more abstractly philosophical, and more prone to write about social elites/urban sophisticates), but I mention it only to say that, damn, Apatow is a great writer and he deserves to be compared to the likes of Allen as much/if not more than anybody else I can think of.
And who else do you know that can write and direct his own movie, while directing his wife and two daughters in some of the most key roles. That gives a whole new meaning to "family film." I mean, who does that?
And it had half the cast of Freaks and Geeks in it, including Martin Starr (Bill Haverchuk) with a huge beard. Geesh man, the movie was damn near perfect.
Posted by: Todd at June 3, 2007 10:19 AMOne more thing. I know you're a David Gordon Green fan so Im assuming you're aware that after Superbad, the next Apatow/Rogen project is a film directed by David Gordon Green called The Pineapple Express with Rogen and James Franco playing potheads in an buddy action movie. Supposedly Lethal Weapon meets Dazed and Confused. Im figuring you know about this one already, and that you are as excited as I am.
Im also really excited for Superbad, because it has the same plot as my favorite episode of the Wonder Years, the episode where Kevin and his friends try to get beer to a high school girls' party. Remember that one?
Posted by: Todd at June 3, 2007 10:24 AMI check your blog intermittently. I'm glad you'll be posting more, although "more" only constitutes something greater than 5 posts in six months. :)
I hear smiley faces are as annoying as acronyms. Deal with it.
Posted by: Adelaide at June 3, 2007 11:55 AMThe film was stunning. Have to see it again.
I'm thinking my fav line was during Cirque de Soleil, when Rogan mentions "those guys are at work right now!"
Posted by: Josiah at June 3, 2007 11:22 PMhey man, daniel brantley here. two things.
1. happy late bday.
2. you know of any individually owned restaraunts in your part of the world? i need to interview a restaraunt owner, and i'm trying to limit my use of chattanooga resources, as the project i'm working on is supposed to be fairly broad scope. if you do know of a restaraunt or two (or a locally owned dry cleaner, laundromat, or landscaping), i'd love you forever if you sent them to me via e-mail (daniel.brantley@yahoo.com). scratch that last part--i'd love you even MORE.
thanks,
