I'm off to Roanoke, Virginia with Morris and Marr, a six-hour journey in the Jap's sweet new ride which, if history is any judge, we will fill with the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Demos and lots of smoking. Should be a busy weekend: I have two film reviews to pen, along with some extra Pulse pieces, and I'll be trying to keep close tabs on my family throughout the hurricane. I'll try to fit in Ben and Anna's wedding for good measure.
I will return on Tuesday with a story from my salad days with Zell Miller. Yes, I used to know him. Yes, he once directed me to a restroom. No, he did not challenge me to a duel.

Posted by: hugo at September 3, 2004 06:18 PMDear Mesh,
That's my name, too, for the last 50 years...on all my paintings and music, and to my friends. 'Came across you on a nonchalant Google attempt. 'Think we're relatives, maybe? About 30 years ago I made a project of contacting every Meshenberg or Mesh or Mesch in the country's phone books of my college library (computers were just being invented then, I guess). A Meshenberg in New Jersey corresponded with me for awhile. Like you, it would have been about 90 years ago my grandparents and their siblings came here from Russia. Some stayed in New York, some continued west to Youngstown, Akron, and Cleveland. I even wrote to a Meschembourg in Paris, France, and somebody in London. I got some replies, but nobody knew or would admit to being related. If we are, I'll bet we'd look vaguely familiar to each other. Thanks for your time.

He was Soutthern, and impassioned, so of course certain, ah, um, mouthpieces didn't like him. But he certainly wasn't racist or insane in his speech. Hey may be elsewhere, but not in that speech.
