Chattanooga has yet to join the ranks of cities that have banned smoking in restaurants and bars (Southerners don't go down without a fight), but when it does, we have a last resort... the nicotini. It was invented on Miami's Los Olas Boulevard, where restaurant smoking is newly forbidden, and it is quite the concoction, designed to give the buzz and taste of a Camel. "Soak tobacco leaves in vodka overnight, deaden the juice's harshness by adding a couple other liquors, and voilą, the nicotini." This had better be a very last resort.

Posted by: mkrueger at July 30, 2003 02:20 AMI don't care if the South rises again, or even get's off the porch, but damnit, they'd better NEVER ban smoking in bars, I mean, what the heck is the point?!?
Posted by: JosiahQ at July 30, 2003 09:58 AMit's about to happen here in nz :(
Posted by: matt at July 30, 2003 03:51 PMI'll be dead from lung cancer before I let some snot nosed hypie tell me i can't smoke in a bar. Lousy North always oppressing us, first the War of Northern Aggresion, then El Nino, now this... dirty no good rotten... and i bet the people behind this no smoking in bars are the same ones responsible for canceling Momma's Family!
Posted by: RJ Reynolds at July 30, 2003 05:55 PMA bar without cigarettes is sick and wrong...but so is "nicotini"...I mean, who smokes because they think cigarettes taste really good? I can't imagine anyone needing a smoke that bad. That's what nicotine gum is for.
Posted by: Christin at August 3, 2003 06:32 PMI think the ban on indoor smoking in Florida (and wherever else it may be banned) is a very good thing. I mean, sure...people have a "right" to smoke, but what about others? Don't we have a right to breathe in clean air? I also think that the nicotini is a very disgusting new development. Who knows how bad it is for you? People who have been manipulated by the tobacco industry will do anything for that kick of nicotine, no matter how disgusting it is.
Posted by: Gloria at September 12, 2003 02:09 PMI am the inventor of the Nicotini on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. I have NEVER smoked and believe that if someone is offended by smoke, don't go to that restaurant. However, since we are living in a society that doesn't take responsibility for our own actions, it is easier to pass a law to make others change. What happened to individual freedom?
Posted by: Larry Wald at December 8, 2003 01:47 PMLarry,
Wonderful to see you wandering onto this site. If you don't mind my asking, how did you dream this drink up? And have you come up with any other concoctions?
Posted by: mesh at December 8, 2003 02:46 PMI worry more about getting a lung full of car exhaust more than second-hand smoke at a bar. And those industrial factories I bike by. Maybe the EPA should worry about cleaning up the air outside before the Health Dept worries about making the air clean inside.
Posted by: Hummer at February 16, 2005 10:19 PMSo if every restaurant allows smoking how can a non-smoker ever go out to eat?
Posted by: Jennifer at June 1, 2006 11:32 AMAs a musician who frequently plays bars and clubs in the greater Philadelphia region, I can only applaud the legislators who have passed these laws in NJ, DE, and now the metro Philadelphia area. As an asthmatic, the smoke irritated me and caused me to have several days of labored breathing. This is my livelihood, and the absence of smoke makes it much more enjoyable and better for me in the long term.
Posted by: Justin at November 9, 2006 08:52 AMI just don't understand why there can't be a compromise. So many people want to ban smoking completely. What's wrong with having Smoking bars/restaurants and Non-Smoking bars/restaurants?
Posted by: Bill at November 9, 2006 02:55 PMRestaurant owners should be aloud to decide if their establishment is smoking or nonsmoking. Supply and demand will insure neater party is left out in the cold.
