Acme Bullpen

If you are a fan of the Boston Red Sox or Chuck Jones cartoons, you will probably find this Bill Rhoden article amusing. (Seeing as I've been in a long discussion of batting clean-up over at Irresponsible Journalism, it's kind of a baseball-themed blog day.)

"What's compelling about Boston and New York is the human dynamic of the elusive Red Sox quest: Wile E. Coyote's eternal inability to wring the Road Runner's neck and the self-inflicted misery sustained in trying. Nothing works, everything backfires. Boston chasing after New York has become a routine that symbolizes humorous frustration: Chasing, just missing. Chasing, just missing."

i dont know...i found that article annoying and frustrating because i feel rhoden's premise is off. its a cute analogy and all but i dont think that this series b/w two of baseball's most storied and (throughout the history of the game, not to mention the last ten to 20 years) most fun to watch teams is appealing b/c it is a chase in which the red sox are always tracking down the yankees. if that were the case, mr. rhoden seems to indicate that fans should actually watch the red sox and yankees not playing each other with the sox losing to pathetic sub-.500 teams and the yankees whipping up on everyone else. its appealing b/c these are two of the best teams in baseball, with the most exciting and well known players in baseball vying for the win and potentially the pennant in what are either of 2 of the top 5 parks in baseball - fenway being #1 and yankee stadium being somewhere else.

these sentences really bugged me, if they didnt altogether pissed me off: "Does anyone care about this series outside of New York and Boston? Not in the sense of fans breathlessly tuning in and watching two rivals go at it." *buzzer sounds* im sorry, but that is incorrect, william, the correct answer is "yes, you fool! yes. you shouldnt even have to ask." i cant say i know what the ratings are but not only am i sure there were there millions of boston and new york fans throughout the country (mr. rhoden read: outside of nyc and boston) tuned in, there were also many other baseball fans (also not in nyc or boston) who wanted to see a good game in which either team could win whether they were tigers fans or braves fans. my entire family (save the two biggest baseball fans, my dad and i) was tuned into the game sunday night. my sister steph from whom seldom is heard a discouraging word even complained that manny ramirez's game ending sliding catch wasnt on espn's top ten web gems and she really couldnt care less about either team - but she watched the game. maybe we're a little hardcore on the baseball fanaticism here, but i guarantee that the majority of the non-boston/nyc viewers of the game were not interested in seeing the coyote beat the roadrunner. if anything thinking of the series as a constant reminder of sysiphus' eternally unsuccessful struggle in hades bores and frustrates the fan into thinking oh well theres no use. even if boston wins, the rock's gonna roll back down the hill and the yankees will come out on top as always. no, the reason why people watched that series if they werent fans of either team was because they knew they would be seeing some good baseball, not a lost cause.

I think I'm with DP.

And, Fenway is the best damn ballpark around anymore since they destroyed old Tiger Stadium, which was the damn greatest ballpark ever. I saw Cecil Fielder hit a home run off the faceplate of the upper deck there during his 50 homerun season...he of course struck out the other 2 times he was up to bat...

and i am with you, josiah. tiger stadium was the best ball park ever. it felt like you may as well have been playing thirdbase you were so close to the game. you could hear the players talking to each other. i visited in its last year and i have a cup of the dirt from the warning track somewhere in my parent's attic. fenway is a close second however, i love that park.
